Full moon drum circle Miami & Miami Beach

Next Full Moon for 2014 – August 10th , 2014

Full moon drum circle party is commonly held between 85st and 79th St. That’s on the wonderful sands of Miami beach, around Collins Ave. Serious drummers attend to the Full moon eve, since less people is aware of the previous day celebration. Both days, Full moon and full moon eve are filled with music (and people) playing and dancing.
Beware that last time police disrupted drum activities very early on. Many people use this opportunity to drink (which is prohibited) and use some other substances (also prohibited) on the occasion. Drum circle people try to stay away from all this, since their main intention is to have fun and a monthly day to play with fellow drummers.
Since then both events start earlier to avoid police intervention and angry neighbors [8:30 – 9:00 PM]

Update from Mark…

at Collins & 85th (or somewhere thereabouts).

I plan enter through the park gate at 85th before sunset (sunset is around 8PM) while it is still open and hope that I’ll be able to use that park gate when I leave around 11 or 12.

Police and park security are turning this into an adventure. I know one guy who got arrested for an outstanding warrant on a traffic ticket that he had paid long ago, another who got arrested for peeing in the bushes, and that’s just what has happened to the people I know. There are also reports about the circle is ending up in different places, anywhere from 75th to 85th. Some people found it last month, and some didn’t. Good luck, everyone (and don’t give the cops a hard time – you won’t win that one).

Thur and Fri were both good, never dull.
Notice went out a few days early for Thur. night.
Friday was more about connection then direction.

Friday night sometime between 11-12, I set up my cheep camera and turned on the movie mode.
Above is the last frame before my finger hit the stop button. I seg’ed this out as a still.

I segmented out five, 80 second, or so, 100mb, bites, of the dark movie and uploaded to RhythmAnarchy Photobucket page.

You can watch/listen to the 80 sec seg’s in any order you like, but I have remixed the five into a 7 minute thing. Three Rhythms, two Rhythm morphs.

File names are the minutes and seconds of the segment in the 30 minute video.

When MiaMe circles get good, there very good.

  2. FSM sightings,

the place has been under servailance for awhile. after reviewing the
    photos I found these.

I believe all survived the touch of the FSM appendage.
They were drooling and foaming for a while, but have recovered to
    almost 100%

An attempted to summon the FSM will be made on Fri.

  3. RA now has its own YouTube channel.
PhotoBucket wasn’t much good for vids but works for stills, and for now it’s still free.
I had this 30 minute vid of Friday night July o8. You tube allows 10 minute vids and up to a G and change for size.
At some small circles (3-5 players) I’ve attended, I have plugged the player into the 900w amp with 600w speakers and did a rhythm rewind of that 30 minutes from Fri night.
There is a large amount of rhythm energy left in that loop, and I haven’t tired of the rewind.
Now you to can have a listen. Had to brake in into Four parts to upload. Not much to look at till the last 20 seconds. All I do is hit the start button, then I go back to my rhythms.

  5. Think I’ll be try’n out some Rhythms @ 75th
I will not bring any glass unless I’m prepared to pack it out. At
the last full moon cycle the beach was trashed with trash. The one
trash can was not visible. It was just a huge pile of bottles. Glass
is not allowed on the beach for obvious reason and I’m sure some of
those piles of bottles were broken. The Powers that control that
stretch of beach seem to have been tolerant to the ex-stream through
the last few months. If we can’t find a way to return that respect for
the use of that stretch of beach, I’m sure we will soon have a show of
    force.
Found some old white buckets in the ally and I’ll have some trash bags
(filled with a bit of sand so they don’t blow away)
Whatever I pack in, I’ll be pack’n out.
    Leave only footprints.
    Burning Man,

is this week. If they can build a city in the desert for 50,000 for a week and leave no trace, a small drum circle on the beach should not have any problems doing the same thing.
If someone dosen’t get this message, you have my permission to inform them about this issue.
And check the weather. If theirs a bit of lightening, Ill be there for
    sure.

You may as well pay attention, cuz ya can’t afford free speach

I know this full moon drumming takes place on the full moon and full moon eve. but I was wondering if anyone knows if the bigger party of the two evenings will be on the full moon eve this time since it falls on Sunday? Also, is there any chance that there will be anything going on on Saturday night? Thanks for any info.

  7. How bad or good, big or small, depends on the energy thats put into it. The best are when we come to play Rhythms. I could care less about how big the party is. In fact the smaller the party the better. I have noticed that the larger the party the worse the beach gets trashed. Then, next thing that happens, is the show of force.
Sorry I can’t give you anymore info to pencil into your appointment book.

NO BOTTLES ON THE BEACH. CANS WORK. First time some Mothers child
has to get stitches guess who gonna pay.

Take your trash out with you. Don’t even leave it in the beach trash
    cans.

    LEAVE NO TRACE!!!!

If we show some respect. They might decide not to show some force.

  8. Juju says:

Is the drum circle going to be this weekend or on Monday?

  9. Argonaut says:

    Juju,
Both days, the night before and the crowded Monday

  10. last cycle (August), went like this.
I arrived around 12:00 at 75th night before FM. The month before (July), I played both nights at 75th.
No one around this time, but you could easily see the Brasileiro Rhythms at 79th. Thought they may have been at 85th.
When I passed 79th you could tell by the cars where everyone was at.
Stayed till bout 3:00, good players, good time, no show of force.
Trash was overflow’n in the two trash cans on the beach and the rest that wasn’t piled next to them was scattered all over, which included many glass bottles, some broken.
Night of FM I again checked 75th at 12:00, where I found the Rhythms this time. Manny and some of the stick players at one big circle and two more smaller circles a short distance South down to the band shell at 73rd. Same good energy, same problem with the trash and glass, same no show of force.
The August cycle also happened to fall on the last weekend before school started, which didn’t start until Tue cuz a FAy.

If you’re the first to set up and can play loud enough so everyone can find the rhythms there’s a good chance that the spot you picked will be the one for the this cycle.
I perfer 75th cuz of the close parking lot. 79th is good too. Just walk to the end of the street and out to the beach.
85th was constantly have’n issues with a regular show of force. I think there’s still a few that hang there. Problem with 85th was traspass’n through the park and some condo comandos complaning maybe. And the trash. Don’t know for sure.
Best bet this cycle is gonna be Sun and Mon at 79th.

NO BOTTLES ON THE BEACH. CANS, PLASTIC WORK JUST FINE.
    First time some Mothers child
has to get stitches guess who gonna pay.

Take your trash out with you. Don’t even leave it in the beach trash
    cans.

    LEAVE NO TRACE!!!!

If we show some respect. They might decide not to show some force.

Sunday Rhytyms at the Rhytym Tower. East end of Johnson St, Hollywood. Holland Park I think. Pot luck at 3:30 Then Sunday night somewhre between 73rd and 85th.

    Hello Everyone,

I just spent (5) months in Santa Barbara California. Wow, when it comes to drumming California has a great vibe, although I believe Miami has some of the best drummers around. Now, Im living at 79th and Collins, so I understand that this is the new location, (for the moment). Im thinking, is there a way to negociate with the city, to see if we can organize this a bit more, so as to please the authorities. Im certainly willing to help all I can. I would also like to suggest Drumming in the park on Saturdays, or even Sundays in the winter, in the daytime. Once a week venue in the daytime. This is certainly a great way to meet people and practice together, there are great jembe players as well as congeros here . As for the evening Full Moon Drumming Circles, what if we asked the city to let us utilize the band shell on 71 and collins, (is it on 71st?). It’s not the great beach venue with the full moon and the ocean breeze, but how long can we continue running from place to place, the authorities here have great resources, and Im certain they would like to finalize this situation as well. I remember 07 and the 85th venue, hey, going through the park and then there were way to many people drinking, smoking ganja, and all very loud and boisterous types, it makes for a bad scene, no wonder MBPD are wired to this drumming venue. In Santa Barbara, every week the drummers buy a permit, and then there off to the beach, everyone has such a great time, and believe me, people party. But nobody oversteps there boundry, and all is well. I know, this is not Santa Barbara, but Miami is as great a place as SB, weather aside perhaps even better. So lets get together and see if we can organize a monthly full moon event, somewhere safe, outdoors, and free from the the crazies and the PD.

    Be well!

“–Now, Im living at 79th and Collins, so I understand that this is the new location, (for the moment).–”

Not a new location, It may not even be one of the locations for this Rhythm cycle.

“–Im thinking, is there a way to negociate with the city, to see if we can organize this a bit more, so as to please the authorities.–”

That means money and the city will have there hand out big time.
It’s much easier to beg for forgiveness from the authorities than it is to pay for there permission.

Plenty going on already. Root around this blogs links. read back some too, some things have already been discussed and maybe someone could bring up an issue again.
Just by take’n some time to reply here seems to be more than most that lerk here do.
At least we know that someone really looks over here every so often.

“–It’s not the great beach venue with the full moon and the ocean breeze, but how long can we continue running from place to place, the authorities here have great resources, and Im certain they would like to finalize this situation as well.–”

I have never been running from place to place. I walk the beach and watch for Rhythm. From 73rd to 85th. This is Rhythm Zone and can develop a few small circles of different flavors or a big one that lights the fuse and becomes a mix of them all.

My own guidelines do not permit me to buy a permit to play to play.

  14. I arrived bout 9-10.    Everything was very good.  Beach protrol hung with us till there shift ended.   No one tried anyones limit so no fire.  But, there was an hour between 12:00 and 1:00, before the MPD arrived, we had no chaperon .  Could of been a window for the children to play with some fire.We were asked to leave at 1:00.  Packed up cleaned up, Left NO TRACE.Very good night.  Wonder if we circled up right in front of the resorts on 74 th, if mom and dad would let us stay up a little later?I’ll make it a bit earlier tonight.  I’m expecting our chaperons to ask us to leave at 1:00It’s easier to beg for forgiveness than pay for permission.FesstoonsRhythmAnarchy  The Reverend IKE Recut this a bit.  windows movie maker 2,4  i think, Vista.  Free from the MS download page.RA Photos If anyone has any use for these stills please use them, I’m not at the moment.  Link, copy, put your own watermark on them if you want.  Property is slavery.

Last night was really nice. Not so many people as on the weekends. I left around 1, there was no sign of beach patrol of anything. Sadly, some people are not using the garbage cans and throw glass and aluminum on the beach. Sad. The circle was alright, I wasn’t playing myself last night but the groove was interesting.

  17. christian says:

    Hi,

Participated in the drum circles Saturday and Sunday. It was nice, I was surprised to see the MPD enjoying the drumming most of Sunday evening. Perhaps a little more organizing effort could take place in regards to garbage, it would be nice if we could designate a few good people to inform the crowd at large of the need to place garbage in trash cans, etc. Also to encourage others to not bring glass to the beach. I truly feel that if we attempt at this organizing it will work well, I for one am very desirous to volunteer, however, there needs to be consensus.. Another thing I have been contemplating is the posibility of drumming in the day time (weekends) in the park at 79th. Any one care to join, and start a daytime group? The park has certainly improved a great deal. I find it a rather pleasant place and there’s plenty of shade. Just a few thoughts…

    Be well, Christian

I really don’t think that we need to use Roberts Rules of Order. It’s a Drum Circle not a Condo Association.

I have designated myself, for one, to pick up and inform when I can.-

I arrived early to the Monday DC which didn’t get going till late. As I waited for some of the core Rhythm makers to arrive, the first Party Clowns started to trickle in. The Party Clowns were a larger than normal percentage of the circle Monday night, but I go to the DC for that moment of RhythmAnarchy , read, more info. I like it when it’s all good. I don’t run away when it’s bad. I, in fact, have had some of my better moments at the bad. That is why I pay the price and stick around
Party Clowns, are the ones who think this is a party just for them, those of us that participate in the Rhythms of the circle are there to entertain and, feed them. And we are also required to get them drunk and stoned.-
Party Clowns find a spot right in front of the Rhythm Players. They swill down anything that they can beg from anyone who doesn’t know better. Then chuck the glass and trash all over the beach and go when they are offered no more.—

There is a price to pay and I’m not talk’n DOLLARS
Find a core of 4-6 Rhythm Makers and go play, the rest will arrive.

  22. Last cycle Sunday night, FM eve, the beach patrol was with us till 12:00 then we were asked to leave @ 1:00. Fire is not allowed on the beach. sigh before you step on the beach points out everything that’s not allowed.
Monday night I think there were just undercover portrols. Couple of poi spinners fired up.

  24. Monday was good but small.
Tuesday was larger but still seems to be a few regulars MIA. Still, very good night.
It seem like even the worst of the party clowns helped pick up trash and there weren’t many bottles to find, although, the two trash bin were just about to overflow.
just after 2;00AM a uniformed enforcer of the laws of miaMe asked the group to leave. It’s nice when they don’t try the aggressive thing to start with.

Well drum circle tonight was cool as hell. We shoed up around 11 ish n it was on 79th on Collins. Pretty easy to find (just listen for the music) n parking wasnt hard to find. A lotta people with a cool vibe. Plus we went in the water to the lil sandbad which was fun. Bad ass considering I haven’t been to a drum circle in many, many years. Anyways you’ll should come check it out. Well be there next time.

  30. I guess I’ll throw in my little report.
I arrived early Friday and found Happz’n’Jenny breathing a tempo into the spot. Soon enough, others arrived and the Rhythms came alive. It was a very solid circle.
I tried some new guidelines out. When I arrive I try to leave enough space on my left and right for the next player to have some space to set up. Then, we both move back and enlarge the circle enough so that the new player and myself can both leave enough space to our left and right for the next player to set up, and so forth.
The regular core drummers were mostly accounted for and it was a very solid circle.

I hav’ta make an observations here. I luv it when folks dance in the circle, but when it gets clogged with so many you can no longer dance, the terminal will close.
Every drum I have been to, when the circle gets clogged with loiters I know that it will be a short time later that we will be asked to leave.
Bout 12:30 the circle disappeared and a Sergeant York type from the MPD brotherhood showed up ready to single handedly arrest us all. The guy acted like he just got off the plane from Bagdad.
Some stayed to pick up any trash left by the party clowns, (there wasn’t much, this group takes their trash with them) some stayed just to piss off the MPD brotherhood. Some moved to 75th

I arrived late Saturday, little after 10. I have never seen the group this large yet, maybe cuz of the football games. The players seem like they wanted to circle up but it just got too crowded and just too many wanted everyone else to play to the tempo of their drumming. In close it was complete chaos, fifty yard away from the crowds, standing on top of that hill of sand, sometimes you could pick out a tempo to the rhythms.
We were asked to leave @1:00. There were 500 around 79th but there were just thousands out on the beach between 75th and 85th this night. Who can blame em.
    Short reply to Michael,
The beach close at 12:00am. So the MPD brotherhood is only doing their job and close’n the beach. It’s not a raid.
The last few times I have been to 85th ,MPD started to showed up at 10:00 and continued to come back every hour, doing I left around 4:00am, but they were still play’n. The only times I have played down here in 2008 with no hassles from the MPD have been at 75th. I believe that the hotels and restaurant are exactly the reason it is allowed. If your spending the night at a hotel with nowhere to go and nothing to do……get the idea.

When I went back to 79th, September I think, the MPD beach patrol were with us all night. Didn’t bother anyone, they just stayed till midnight flashed there light and left. Hour later we were asked to leave.
So every time at 75th I had no worries. Every time at 79th, asked to leave by MPD between 12;00 -1;00
Took one pic from the top of the hill. Not very good, but that’s all I did.
Because I’m a RhythmAnarchist, I don’t do property, so feel the freedom to copy or link as you like.http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/RhythmAnarchy/79th1-10-09/S7301188.jpg?t=1231908690
    Chow
RA the aggressive chase the crowd away thing and maybe handed out a few tickets and cuffs.
We did a small group at 75th in June that worked really well, played till we could not play any longer. No one asked us to leave.
July, August were huge at 75th, played till we couldn’t pick up our hands any longer. MPD never came.

I hav’ta make an observasion here. I luv it when folks dance in the circle, but when it gets cloged with so many you can no longer dance, the terminal will close.
Every drum I have been to, when the circle gets clogged with loitters I know that it will be a short time later that we will be asked to leave.

Did anyone attend last full moon drum in miai beach?? That was horrible are they always Under- age drink fests?/ That was not the true meaning of “drum circles” There were people(teens) falling down drunk in circle, fights almost breaking out etc… I would REALLY recommend serious drummers go to full moon eve or new moon drum circles which are TRUE drum circles very spiritual and very relaxing and fun! anyone agree??

    • Argonaut says:

Bo, the dates are based on the calendar. You can read on this page, there’s a full moon drum circle and a full moon eve.
The coordination is based on the rhythm !

Just an asside. I started going when they used to have the drum circle right on 79th, long before 85th. We started doing 85th cause of getting raided too early at 79th due to lack of parking id guess. but now that they lock the park on 85th at night i usually walk along the beach. i dunno, like i said before ive been to atleast 50 of these and lately it seems like a lot of people go on the wrong day. just gimmie some heads up for some people who have been going as long as i have!! =D

  38. Went last night. Nice group of regular core rhythm makers. Many of this group has been to 50 or more circles and I know this cuz i was there with them. Daylight save’n time so it started early and I was late.
Few were leave’n when I arrived. Quite to, wasn’t sure anyone was even there. Couldn’t here any Rhythms from Collins.
I was able to play the tongue drum with my hands, when the rhythm makers allowed it, and still hear my tunes. Just grove for a while the get a little social for a bit then back to a grove. Weather was warm, still, perfect.
Tempo and volume went every direction but all were well connected. I guess over the past couple of years I have been to around 50 of these in the Rhythm Zone that runs from the bandshell at 73rd to 85th. I have been to the wrong place on the right day and the right place on the wrong day.
    ………
Bo,,,,, instead of going by your moon calendar why don’t you try drum’n with the regular core rhythm makers that really make this happen. You do drum, right. You might try what i tried. Read this blog. not every word but it helps to scan back a bit. With all the content on here we could start a FAQ……..Surf the links you do know how to use those? And, the links on the links that they are linked to, ect.
If your only motive for join’n the rhythms is to get sloppy drunk, trash the beach and just be one of those type of party clowns. I have to tell you that the rhythm makers are not there to be your “Late Night Evening Prostitute ” It’s not hard to find the rhythms if you watch for them and it gets easier to locate if you are friends with some of the rhythm makers that that do watch the rhythm. And please don’t mind me if I get a bit crude

Dude, rythmanarchy, you’re obviously a complete tool. First off i am a percussionist and what does that have to do with me wanting to know the exact date of the full moon. From what i heard there was a drum circle last night or as you might call it “an amazing rythm love fest” or something like that.

Ryan, the rest of the comment has been removed, since you clearly don’t know how to express yourself without cursing

After the recent break-ups of the drummer circle at midnight by the Miami Beach Police, I had a conversation with our neighborhood resources officer. He told me that, if we move the circle to the north-end of the park at 85th street, it will be most likely, that the circle can keep on going past midnight without problems. The location where the circle meets right now (79th street), is close to oceanfront residences and those are the people who filed noise complaints on those nights. There is public parking at 85th street area as well (87 terrace) and there is a pathway along the south wall of the Deezerland hotel & the park. There are no oceanfront residences who could call in and file noise complaints, which in return does not make the police department have to come out there with their ATVs and bust up the circle. The Miami Beach Police Department knows about the drum circle for more than 10 years now and has no problem with it when everything is cool, but they have to respond to residents complaint calls. I also suggest that the “herbalists” enjoy their smokes in their cars or before coming over to the beach, because the police has to act by law, when that distinctive smell lingers on the beach. I think if we play by that rules, everything will be fine and we can enjoy the drumming without being chased off the beach. Peace, Mike

What time zone is Eastern Time?
Eastern Time is the Eastern Time Zone of the United States of America (USA) and Canada.  Eastern Standard Time (EST) is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-5).

Does Eastern Time observe Daylight Saving Time?
In most states in the USA and in most provinces in Canada, Daylight-Saving Time (DST)  is observed.  During DST the time is shifted forward by 1 hour to EDT;  which is 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-4).

After the Summer months Eastern Time is shifted back by 1 hour to US Eastern Standard Time (EST) or (GMT-5).

If you can’t calculate I will do it for you for $1,000,000

I was woundering what are the days for the drum cirlce in South beach in June? My friends and I are driving all the way from jupiter and the last drum circle we tried to attensd in April was being broken up by the time we got there.

  45. There are lots of DC’s all over South Florida.
In fact, there is one on the full moon in Jupiter.
….http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/JupiterBeachFloridaDrumCircle/ …. I have never been but heard that it is well attended with good players. The one that I do go to up that way when I can on a Friday Night is Sunsport Gardens Family Naturist resort…. http://www.sunsportgardens.com/ … Then there’s Michel Dean Goodmans group up there in WBP .. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SoutheastFloridaDrumCircleCommunity/messages ..That’s where you can find people drumming in a circle if that’s what you were look’n to attend.
I will add more later about why April was being broken up or why it gets broken up at all.
    later

  47. […] Every full moon, there’s a gathering of people, young and old, who bring drums and instruments to an area in North Miami Beach to celebrate the full moon. This is a great way to enjoy the weather and some really great energy on the beach. Start looking on full moon nights around 85th street and you’ll come across a large group of people all having fun. Of course, the police come to break it up at some point around midnight or so, but a good time is had by all. Check out the Miami Drums website here […]

    • Hey there, I’m seeing a lot of questions about when the drum circles are, I send out a newsletter every month when firedancers are planning on attending. Hit me up at my weblink and sign up for the newsletter and you’ll know a few days early when the DC is coming.
