Yes, the full moon approaches, and that means that the Miami Beach full moon circle is around the corner.
Check the full moon page for more info.
Have in mind, respect the beach and everybody around you [ Even the people that would enjoy it the morning after the percussion feast] and be careful with the things you take to the beach. Trashcans can be full, and leaving dangerous glass and aluminum cans on the sand is not an option.
Also, Earthdance is this weekend. Saturday September 13 from 9 pm http://www.myspace.com/earthdancemiami
There’s a $20 charge fee, I think is less if you RSVP. Many good local bands play that night, their page doesn’t mention anything about a drum circle… hope someone can clarify this!
and last,
I’m posting a new page with all the videos produced for the blog. Hope to have more time to produce a couple more. Have fun this weekend, take care.

I came across this interesting article from the East Hampton Star online edition, apparently drum circle gatherings are not only problematic in this part of the country but over there as well.
I’ve collected a couple of quotes that I’d like to post here, and I’d love you to leave me a comment with your opinion:
He said he had known for some time that the beach was being used for drumming. “It’s allowed to go on between 6 to 9 without permits. It’s not amplified music. It has not required permits. It was not a problem.”
“What happened last night was a lot of people, open fires, alcohol. It was a huge crowd, not boisterous and out of control, but I can’t condone it.”
Informed by the town police that he would need a permit, he said on Tuesday, “this is not an event — it’s just 15 to 20 drummers meeting up on the beach playing acoustical instruments.”

I got the remainder for this weekend Oak Park drum circle:
Oak Grove Park Drum Circle Sunday August 24, 2008 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – 690 NE 159 Street Miami, FL
FREE EVENT. This is a young circle with a distinctly Haitian flavor. Come ready to pick up some sweet island grooves. The circle does not take place in exactly the same place in the park every week; but it’s not a big place. Just look around for Penny or Haiti Blues. There are more good (really good) drummers than there are drums, so bring extras if you have them. There is some seating; but you may want to bring your own. If you want to bring kids, the playground is great.
Also this Saturday and Monday at the African Heritage center at Liberty town:
If you know Kuku, djole you’re welcome to join the drum activities. There’s also a dance class Saturday 26 at 3 Pm 6161 NW 22nd Ave Miami, FL 33142 (305) 638-6771

Rain or (moon) Shine! – If it’s pleasant out, we can drum in the garden, and if it’s wet, we can play inside. Bring your instrument(s), whatever they are. Bring your desire to explore and experiment. I’ll have some extra drums.
Then on August 16th, we have the full moon party at the beach. Mixed reviews about the last couple of months. If you go, have in mind drinking is prohibited at the beach, and that beach patrol likes to shut down everything around 1 Am. If you’re serious about drumming, the best thing is to go early in the night. More info at this page

Unity on the Bay – Full Moon Drum Circle FRIDAY, JULY 18th from 7 to 9PM – fee $10
Coordinated by Carlos Manuel Planas and Jude Byrne.
We meet in a church, have a spiritually-flavored drum circle, and therefore have a zero tolerance drug and alcohol scene. We want to create a non-threatening safe space, a family atmosphere. We believe that the music on its own creates a healing, natural high, so artificial ingredients are not needed in this environment. All instruments are welcome. People show up with djembes, doumbeks, congas,
etc. Latin rhythms may predominate, but all rhythms are welcome.
Held at: Unity on the Bay Church, 411 NE 21st St., Miami FL, near Biscayne Bay

I’ve also been told about the class/drum circle at the African Heritage center Saturday’s event – from 3pm to 6pm. I’m going to check it out this weekend!
Matthew Hill is the musical director of Delou african ensemble. Delou was created by Njeri Plato-Dioubate in 1987. One of its main objectives was to portrait and preserver African culture and music, traditional and contemporary in this side of the Atlantic.
Matthew took some time after extensive playing that afternoon to do this interview. He talks about his musical background, some of his colleagues and teachers, performing as a djembe player as well as his experience in Africa.
Press play to play
If you’re interested to know more about Delou, check their website or attend any of their classes at FIU Biscayne campus Sunday’s afternoon.
